Rod Stewart says he is "over the moon" as he celebrates his 15th number one record.

The 68-year-old star admitted he was “very proud” to be back at the top of the charts with new album Time.

The first time Stewart – known for hits like Maggie May and Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? – topped the album charts was in 1971 with Every Picture Tells A Story.

His last number one in the UK was in 1983 with the single Baby Jane.

Stewart said the secret of the new record’s success was that it drew on his long experience of life.

“I’ve lived a wonderful life and when I was putting the book together it inspired many of the songs.

“If there’s anything that God gave, and some people may disagree, he gave me a tremendous vehicle in my voice.

“It’s just very unique, so I was just lucky to be given this voice.”

Time features 12 new songs, 11 of which he wrote himself, and is also produced by the avid Celtic and Manchester United fan.

Twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he has sold an estimated 150 million records worldwide since his music career started in the early 1960s.

He was made CBE in 2007, released a bestselling autobiography last year and will embark on on a global tour next month.

Asked what keeps him going after achieving so much, he said: “The music business and my children – I’ve got lots of kids, I still play football and I don’t smoke which is a very important thing.”

Stewart was not the only 70s star to make a top 10 comeback this week. Abba singer Agnetha Faltskog came in at number six with her album A, her highest-charting solo record in the UK.

Coronation Street dominated the British Soap Awards, scooping eight of 16 awards including Best Soap, while EastEnders picked up just one prize.

The only gong for the BBC show was a Lifetime Achievement award for Adam Woodyatt, who has played Ian Beale since the soap began.

Coronation Street also proved a hit with fans, taking home three out of five of the public-voted awards.

Alan Halsall accepted his Best Actor award just after the ceremony had paid tribute to Bill Tarmey, Corrie’s Jack Duckworth, who died last November aged 71.

Halsall said: “Fancy bringing me up here after he’s (Tarmey) been on the screen. I owe a lot to that man, he means a lot to me.

“I firmly believe that you’re only as good as the people around you and so thank you to everybody who works at Coronation Street and every cast member.

“I’d also like to thank my beautiful wife Lucy-Jo Hudson and also our special guest, our baby bump. Can’t wait to meet ya!”

Malcolm Hebden, who plays comedy character Norris Cole, accepted the Best Soap award on behalf of Coronation Street, flanked by all his co-stars.

He said: “I’m not really sure why I’ve been chosen to accept this award. I was hoping for Sexiest Male but you take what you can get. And I don’t see what’s funny about that!

“But we’re all thrilled and the public have voted for us so we must be doing our job properly. Thank you the public. We love you!”

Corrie beauty Michelle Keegan was voted Sexiest Female for the fifth time in a row.

The actress, who has just announced she will leave the soap next year, laughed: “I can’t believe it. This is ridiculous. I’m going to get this out in 50 years and be the coolest gran ever!”

Accepting Villain of the Year, her co-star Natalie Gumede confessed she had felt “strange” about being called a villain, but admitted “this is great”.

Also taking home Best Dramatic Performance, she thanked Halsall. She has previously admitted how hard she found it to play abusive Kirsty Soames, who suffered violent fits of rage.

Gumede, who last year won Best Newcomer, said: “I really feel this award belongs to everyone at Coronation Street. In the last year I have been picked up and put back together so many times and it’s been the experience of my life.”

A deadline for pop star Justin Bieber to reclaim his pet monkey has passed - meaning he may lose the pet to the Federal Republic of Germany.

The singer’s 17-week-old capuchin, called Mally, was seized by customs staff at Munich’s Franz Josef Strauss Airport after he failed to produce the correct papers for the animal.

The Canadian star was detained “for some time” while customs officials took Mally into quarantine at the airport.

Mally was sent to a Munich Animal Protection League (MAPL) animal shelter, where he has remained unclaimed since March 28.

Customs officials said that if Bieber did not produce the papers by midnight on May 17 then Mally would become the property of Germany.

The deadline fell after offices closed for a three-day holiday weekend in Germany, and it won’t be clear before Tuesday whether the documents arrived.

Officials will also be billing the pop star for the monkey’s care, vet visits and food – an invoice that will run to several thousand pounds.

MAPL said that they had received two emails claiming to be from Bieber’s management company.

In the messages, they were asked how long they had to produce the paperwork before the monkey would be put down, and secondly whether it could be given to a zoo.

Custom officials say they have yet to receive any formal request for that from Bieber or any of his representatives.

Speaking last month, customs spokesman Thomas Meister, said: “If by May 17 there is nothing, then he loses ownership of the animal and it becomes the property of the Federal Republic of Germany.

“If Bieber really does want to place the animal in a zoo, he is welcome to contact customs authorities and forfeit Mally at any time, but will likely have to pay costs associated with keeping the monkey so far and a fine.”

Bieber flew his pet, understood to have been a 19th birthday president from music producer Jamal Rashid on March 1, to Munich on the Cessna Citation X he rents for £13,000-a-time.

He was performing in the city on his world tour, which had been blighted by a series of unfortunate headlines.

He was booed for arriving late for his concert at the O2 in London and had to apologise to fans. At a later gig he collapsed on stage and had to be treated in hospital.

He then cancelled a concert in Portugal, saying he had had a “rough week” in London.

In March, Bieber and his entourage were asked to leave the Hotel Le Meurice in Paris apparently because of the “nuisance caused by the presence of his fans around the buildings”.

In April he came under fire for a message he wrote in the guestbook at the Amsterdam home where Anne Frank once lived. He wrote he hoped the Holocaust victim “would have been a belieber”.

To have a chance of winning this year's Eurovision Song Contest, British hope Bonnie Tyler will have to outperfom the hot favourites from Denmark.

Sky Bet rates Only Teardrops by Emmelie de Forest as 4/6 to bring the bacon home to the Danes, way ahead of the chasing pack.

Sky makes Norway’s I Feed You My Love by Margaret Berger second favourite at 5/1, while Ukraine is at 8/1.

Tyler had been hoping to avenge the dismal performance by the UK last year when Engelbert Humperdinck limped into second to last place with Love Will Set You Free.

However, she is a rather longer shot at 50/1.

And betting shows she is more fancied to come last than first, with William Hill offering a price of 8/1 that she finishes bottom of the points table.

Tyler, who is performing the track Believe in Me, has still managed to make a big impression in Malmo, which has been her home for the past few days in preparation for the huge show.

At a concert featuring five of the leading countries involved in backing Eurovision, the crowd was chanting her name as each of the acts came on stage.

And as she and her team tucked in to a traditional Swedish feast in a local restaurant, the other diners joined in singing her entry.

George Michael has been airlifted to hospital after a rush-hour crash on the M1 motorway.

The singer was a passenger in a car which crashed at 5.47pm on Thursday, and he suffered cuts and bruises.

Three ambulances, as well as the Hertfordshire air ambulance, were called to the incident near the junction for the M25.

A spokesman for the 49-year-old entertainer said: “George Michael was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a traffic accident on Thursday evening, no third party was involved.

“He is being treated for superficial cuts and bruises but is fine. We have no further comment at this time.”

Ambulance spokesman Gary Sanderson said: “A man who we believe to be in his 40s sustained a head injury and following treatment, stabilisation and immobilisation by land and air ambulance crews, he was flown to hospital for further care.”

The singer was the only person that was treated for injuries.

In 2010 Michael – real name Georgios Panayiotou – was handed an eight-week jail sentence for crashing his Range Rover while under the influence of cannabis.

He was banned from driving for five years, and ordered to pay a £1,250 fine.

Following his release he told reporters that he wanted to “start again”.

A tiny Australian town better known for cotton-picking than culture has seen thousands of electro-pop fans descend for Daft Punk's album launch.

Random Access Memories has been available online for several days but the French duo decided to stage the “official album playback” in far-flung Wee Waa – population 1,653.

Some 4,000 tickets have been sold for the event, even though Daft Punk are not expected to attend.

Mayor Conrad Bolton said: “The main street’s just chock-a-block, the transformation is just out of sight, it’s amazing.

“We’re infamous around here, but today I think we’re famous.”

Wee Waa, known as the Cotton Capital of Australia, in New South Wales, has thrown itself into the spirit of the occasion, with the local butchery crafting Daft Pork Sausages.

The bakery, open all night specially for fans seeking a post-party snack, is selling Punk Pies and Techno Treats, and a local pub has ordered five times the usual number of kegs.

There are robot masks, a nod to Daft Punk’s trademark headgear, on every street corner, with the town recording a series of online videos “Road to Wee Waa” showing local farmers, cotton threshers and schoolchildren in costume.

Staff at the radio astronomy observatory, reported by Rolling Stone magazine to be the reason Daft Punk chose Wee Waa to launch its futuristic album, recorded time-lapse footage of the telescopes dancing to the track Get Lucky.

Sony has chartered a jet to fly journalists out to cover the event and has repeatedly quashed rumours that the duo – Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter - would put in a surprise appearance at the party.

But there have been reported sightings in neighbouring states.

Speaking to Australian radio ahead of the launch event, Daft Punk said Australia was the last place they had toured back in December 2007 and returning there with their first album in eight years felt natural.

“Each time we went to Australia it was a great experience. It feels like Australia understands our music and we’re excited to present the music there,” the duo said.

Hi-de-Hi! actor Paul Shane has died at the age of 72 following a short illness, his agent has said.

The star of the 80s BBC sitcom was surrounded by friends and family in a hospice in his home town of Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

Shane played holiday camp host Ted Bovis in Hi-de-Hi!, but also starred in You Rang M’Lord? and Oh, Dr Beeching!

His role in the fictional Maplin’s holiday camp saw him regularly trying to scam holidaymakers out of money.

He starred alongside Su Pollard, who played chalet maid Peggy Ollerenshaw, and Ruth Madoc, who played chief yellow coat Gladys Pugh.

The show, set in 1959, was inspired by the experiences of co-creator Jimmy Perry, who worked in Butlins after the war.

It ran for eight series between 1980 and 1988 and also launched Hi-de-Hi! as a catchphrase.

Linda Kremer, Shane’s agent for 15 years, said: “Paul Shane was a consummate professional, a true gentleman, a good friend, and a joy to work with.

“He didn’t suffer fools, always maintained his sense of humour, never stinted on the time he gave to his fans.

“He lightened my life and I’ll miss him enormously.”

Shane was a coal miner before starting out as a cabaret act touring working men’s clubs in the 1960s.

In his later career he appeared in Emmerdale as Solomon Dingle, as well as having parts in Holby City, Doctors, Coronation Street and A Touch Of Frost.

He is survived by three daughters and six grandchildren. His wife Dory died in 2001.

Tributes to the actor have been appearing on Twitter, with comedian Ricky Gervais calling him an “old school Britcom hero”.

Actress Lisa Riley tweeted: “RIP Paul Shane I adored you in Hi-Di-Hi great comedy actor lost!!”

OJ Simpson has taken the stand in a bid to secure a retrial over his armed robbery conviction - and avoid spending the rest of his life in jail.

Having famously avoided the witness stand in his 1995 murder trial, the former sports star and actor gave sometimes emotional testimony in a packed Las Vegas courtroom.

The 65-year-old was jailed for a maximum of 33 years after being convicted in 2008 on 12 charges including armed robbery and kidnapping.

He and five other men stormed into a Las Vegas hotel room and took thousands of dollars’ worth of memorabilia at gunpoint from a pair of sports collectors.

Simpson’s lawyers argued at the time that he was simply trying to recover stolen property and was unaware that one of his associates had brought a gun.

After five years in prison, he was back in court to ask for a retrial.

Asked by his lawyer if he thought the hotel room scheme was legal, he responded: “Yes I did. It was my stuff.

“I followed what I thought the law was. My lawyer told me ‘You can’t break into a guy’s room’ and I didn’t break into the room. I didn’t beat up anybody.

“And the guys acknowledged it was my stuff, even though they claimed they didn’t steal it.”

Simpson repeatedly and emphatically denied from the witness stand that the use of guns was discussed ahead of the hotel room confrontation and said he had not been aware that one of the men with him was carrying one.

He became emotional, pausing briefly in his testimony, when discussing the property he said he was told was to be found in addition to the memorabilia, which included pictures of his deceased daughter and parents.

“I thought this is stuff I should have, not some guy selling it in a hotel in Vegas,” he said.

Simpson’s case is based on claims that his lawyer at the time, Yale Galanter, mishandled his case and failed to mention the offer of a plea deal.

He prompted laughter in court when talking about cell mates who “know a lot about the law, especially how to break the law”.

Outside court, Simpson’s friend and doctor Henry Johnson said the whole world had witnessed the star’s honesty in the witness box.

He said: “I anticipate that OJ will be coming home. One day OJ will regain his reputation and the truth will come out.”

Simpson, a former top American football player turned actor, was accused of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in 1994.

He had been arrested after a televised car chase through Los Angeles.

He was acquitted in a trial carried live on television – with the verdict said to have been watched by half of the American population.

A civil jury later found him liable for the deaths of his former spouse and Mr Goldman in a wrongful death lawsuit, awarding their families $33.5m in damages.

Now Clark County district judge Linda Marie Bell will rule on whether Simpson, one of the most famous prison inmates in America, will face trial once again.
